We all know that Jimi Hendrix (with the help of Eddie Kramer [sp]) was one of the first to use stereo for great special effects. However, I bought an imported version of "Are You Experienced" because it had a few different tracks and it sounds better if I flick the ST/MN switch to mono. For this particular pressing the master was cut with the treble on the right and the bass on the left. There is a little bit of overlap and some "stereo" effects but overall it is the worst separation I've ever heard. Also worthy of contemptable note are those "re-processed for stereo" catastrophes where an originally mono recording is re-mastered for stereo which usually means that some reverb or delay was added producing a terribly unrealistic sound. I'd rather have the oroginal mono masters.

For a really cheap mixing demonstration, get a copy of the first Ramones album, you'll find Johnny Ramones guitar on the right channel, Tommy Ramones bass on the left channel, and Dee Dee Ramones voice and the other puke (Joey I think) on drums smack in the middle. If you get sick of the three notes Johhny is playing ( he didn't learn how to play anything but chords until the third or forth album) flip the balance to the left and enjoy. By the way, I like the album a lot...

I sure hope you are kidding about Johnny Ramone not knowing how to play the guitar. He played in a group before the Ramones as lead guitarist and I hear he was pretty good. You have to remember, the Ramones play music for young kids, not adults. Children don't need to hear more than three chords. David

"Sid Sings" has gotta be one of the lowest-tech albums full of first rate music I ever heard (I'm excluding pirate albums). As for the most nauseating record of all time, I'd pick the classic Orion recording of Berlioz' "Symphonie Funebre & Triomphe" although I puke almost as violently when it's recorded properly with good musicians. Nothing is capable of being as truly wretched as genuinely BAD classical music. Michael Ellis - Fairchild AI Lab - Palo Alto CA - (415) 858 4270

Who the hell you think you are be jammin' up my boys the Ramones? They play fun music, what the hell do you want? They don't waste time. I have a recording of them playing the Palladium in NYC for New Years 1980 (or so) and they did 36 songs in 70 minutes. Whoa, talk about value for your entertainment dollar. And there ain't no better movie on this whole world than their classic "Rock (rock rock rock rock) and Roll High School." Seriously, it's a really fun movie, and not punk-oriented gross at all, probably rated PG and hilarious. I'll give it 4 safety pins. Beat on the brat with a baseball bat, oh yeah!
