[comp.sources.d] OFFICIAL Patch 1 for auth 2.1: hostnames ending with a number

matt@group-w.uchicago.edu (Matt Crawford) (05/04/90)

Anyone applying the patch, beware! Nothing in Brnstnd's license terms
say that you can distribute a modified version, and no exception is made
for modifications which purport to originate with the author.

Yes, maybe if you spent a week reading law books, you might find a valid
defense for going ahead and doing so anyway. Or you might not.

Let this not turn into a Usenet-tempest please, people... my last
teapot cracked over a misunderstanding and the dormouse scared
my manager out of a year's growth.

So? Don't apply the patches, just redistribute the origin and the patches.

INIGO:	Crawford, he can... fuss.
FEZZIK:	Fuss, fuss... I think he like to scream at us.
INIGO:	Probably he means no... harm.
FEZZIK:	He's very very short on charm.

Violence never solves problems, it just changes them into more subtle problems

As Russ Nelson pointed out, this means that unless you ask me first, you
have to distribute patches and the original separately, rather than in a
single patched version. People do this anyway, as unpackaging, patching,
and repackaging software is error-prone and accomplishes little. I don't
see any reason for this to cause concern.

Matt, why do you feel compelled to post these childish attempts to
discourage people from the normal distribution of my code? If you have
purely good intentions, why don't you try saving the net some bandwidth
and angst by telling me your concerns through e-mail before you post?
Could you at least read 17 USC before you talk about copyright law?

Lucid enough?
