[comp.sources.d] PERL patches

feb@cblpe.ATT.COM (Franco Barber) (02/23/88)

I keep seeing references to patches to perl. The highest level
patch I have received at my site is #14, but just today
someone mentioned patchlevel 22. Can someone post patches 15-22?

Thanks.

Well, I have the patches now. Thanks to John Daleske (pine!daleske).

They were posted, and over a fairly long time period. Patch 18 has been posted
three times. Are you monitoring comp.sources.bugs like you should?

If you are missing patches, there are instructions in every patch for getting
missing patches. If you are the only one missing these patches, there is
no reason to inflict them on the entire net. If you and some neighbors are
missing them, collect them via mail and then repost them yourself with a
distribution that limits them to the sites that didn't get them (to the extent
possible).

I'd also like to stress again that anyone with Internet access can get kits
patched to level 21 from jpl-devvax.jpl.nasa.gov (128.149.8.43) via anonymous
ftp.

P.S. I've already mailed the patches to you, Franco.

I finally got around to applying the last set of patches to perl (patches 19
through 28) and found that the patches to some of the comments in the perl_man
files were rejected. I realize that comments in a man file aren't exactly
critical, but I wanted to track it down anyway, and I hadn't heard of any
problems reported by anyone else.

The problem was introduced in patch 18, when the names of the files were
changed from perl.man.? to perl_man.? (which Configure took care of). The
patch to perl.man.1 that changed the name internally in the comments follows:

Index: perl_man.1
Prereq: 3.0.1.4
*** perl.man.1 Tue Mar 27 16:41:29 1990

Note that on the $Log: line, there is no ! in the second half, even though
the text is clearly different than in the first half.

Did I miss some discussion on this back a while?

I had exactly the same problem but just ignored it since, as you said,
comments in a man page aren't exactly critical.

If you did, I did too.
