[comp.sources.d] arc-compatible

anderson@Apple.COM (Clark Anderson) (01/22/91)

I'm looking to write a program on the Macintosh that will
take an ASCII-only file and create an arc file that can
be de-compressed by a PC on the other end of a modem.

I have already tried the commercial Mac products that claim
to be able to do this, and they can't.

Does anyone here know where I might find a description of
the arc file format so that I may do my own arc-compatible
compression? I know little about PC's, so if there is a better
(or more widely used) compression standard, I'd like to hear
about it. I would need some reference on how to create the
file...

Thanks in advance...

You might just take the UNIX version of arc (there are several, you
need the one which works on sysV) and port it.
