[comp.sources.d] CVS for RCS 5.5?

lowell@tc.fluke.COM (Lowell Skoog) (02/21/91)

I am trying to bring up CVS 1.0 on my system. I recently upgraded to
RCS 5.5. It appears that CVS 1.0 understands RCS version 4 files.
Is there an official version of CVS that works with RCS 5.5? Where I
can get it? Also, can anyone send me Brian Berliner's current email
address?

CVS 1.0 will not work with RCS 5.5. A new version will be available sometime
soon. This info from the author.

CVS 1.2 has been available for about a month now on prep.ai.mit.edu (in
pub/gnu/cvs-1.2.tar.Z) and works with RCS 5.5. Great program, definitly
a must for developement.

This is from the CVS docs. I'm sure that Brian Berliner could give you more
info then this..

cvs is a front end to the rcs(l) revision control system
which extends the notion of revision control from a collec-
tion of files in a single directory to a hierarchical col-
lection of directories consisting of revision controlled
files. These directories and files can be combined together
to form a software release. cvs provides the functions
necessary to manage these software releases and to control
the concurrent editing of source files among multiple
             software developers.

What are the chances of having CVS ported to SysV?
I was having a look at the source code yesterday and it doesn't look
hard. Has any one done it?

It needs the ndbm library. Is gnu's gdbm a suitable replacement?

I have it running on Xenix 2.3.2. It required writing some
routines to emulate the BSD specific functions called, shortening
a few file names to make them compatible with SysV 14 character
limits.

I'm using gdbm and it seems to be OK, but I don't fully
understand the modules stuff enough to properly test it.

I rewrote checkin in perl adding a few features such as the
ability to save the files before checkin and ignore binary and
empty files.

I can send patches if you like.

Bill.
