Copyright is the "right to copy", not the "right to use", and if you give away copies, prior to gaining some form of acceptance to your "licence", you can't restrict the use of those copies. On the other hand, what you might mean is that it is free to give away copies (and/or the original) to non-commercial third parties, but copies (and/or the original) may not be sold. Good thinking to make all of the parts apper with the rest. Can I
make one more suggestion? Package part 01 of n so that it's very
small, article-sized, with the the introductory front matter that
gives you a description of what the software is and does and (perhaps)
if it has a full-time home on an ftp site. That would make it easier
to reuse the "base note" for each article in other contexts; in
particular, we wouldn't be very far at all from cross-posting that
article direct into comp.archives.
