[comp.sys.misc] Wanted: optical disk for backups

I need some input on the use of optical disks for user backups...

We have several Apollo/Mentor networks with approximately one GByte
user data each. Currently we back all of this up on mag tape. A
full backup takes many hours and many tapes. So, I would like to
evaluate the use of optical disks for this task. There seem to be
several advantages to an optical type system, the most appealing would
be putting a full backup on a single disk, (maybe more than one backup).
Another being that optical would be more permanent than mag tape.
Also, one optical disk would take far less room in the vault than
ten or so mag tapes.....

So, I would like general commnets on cost, reliability, vendors, etc.
for the drives, interfaces, and media .
