RE: your questions: UUCP: there has just been published a very good arcticle on the "worldnet" on the Communications of the ACM explaining the nature of most (all?) of the large networks in the world. Particularly interesting is that it describes how mail can be sent across different "networks". The article is "Notable Computer Networks" by John Quaterman and Josiah Hoskins. It appeared in the Oct 86 issue of the CACM. ARC: Could the Rainbow utility be arc'ed with a more recent release of arc? arc is known for future update formats not being upward (or is it downward?) compatible with old releases of arc. By the way, i thought arc, uudecode and uuencode were msdos or unix tools.. maybe I am confused. hope this helps, Jose arpa: jrodrig@edn-vax

ARC is well known for being downward compat; that is to say, a newer version will unarc files created with an older version. It doesn't go the other way 'round, tho. You might check with Ken Kaplan for more info. He runs the St Louis DECUS bbs and (I believe) has some connection with the Rainbow group. To reach him, you'll have to use the fido-usenet gateway: decvax!encore!vaxine!spark!100!22!ken_kaplan At the very least, he can point you in the right direction.
