[comp.sys.misc] WordStar format

david@varian.UUCP (David Brown) (12/10/86)

Is the format of WordStar files created on CP/M machines (e.g. Kaypro)
identical that of WordStar files on the IBM/PC? I've always suspected
that it is, but I've never tried moving files between the systems.
A friend is planning on buying a PC clone in the near future, and she
wants to be able to move WordStar files back and forth between her Kaypro
and the PC clone (using one of the "read foreign format diskette" programs;
I don't know which she has). I told her that as long she moved the
files in binary mode (preserving all the 8th bits, etc.), that it should
work, but I don't know for sure.

Yes, it is identical. I receive WordStar files on Osborne-1 disks all
the time, read them using Media Master and them edit them using WordStar
on my IBM clone. No problem...

I've transferred Wordstar files from a variety of systems, and they
all appear to be coded the same way. I've moved files between
CP/M and MS-DOS systems.

Thank you all for your replies -- the answer is a resounding YES.
It's nice to know that postings really do get out there and read...

I started to thank each of you individually, but I've received so many
answers that I thought I would post (also so other folks reading the
net would hear the answer). Several folks mentioned Uniform and Media
Master as programs that they have used to move files between CP/M and
MSDOS; I have myself have used XenoCopy (but I haven't tried WordStar
files yet). One person mentioned to watch out for ^Z at the end of
the file; search for end of file in WordStar will not behave if the ^Z
is not there.
