[comp.sys.misc] 8150, 3270, INS info wanted..

dtr@dsi480.UUCP (DTR) (04/25/87)

I have recently been asked to look into the possibility of moving
some data from an IBM 8150 to a Stratus machine. Unfortunately
I have almost no background in IBM systems, transaction based
systems, or 3270 protocols. I guess that's what made me the logical
choice when it came time to assign tasks ;-) !

Does anyone out there have some recommendations as far as a good
place to look for information regarding the 8150 and/or 3270 ?
Time is a little critical, so a good overview or reference work
would be better than an introduction, but any and all recommendations
	would be a big help.

Also, as long as I'm picking your (vastly superior ;-)) brains, has
anyone out there had any experience with the 3270 emulation card
for the PC marketed by INS ?

	Thanks in advance

From mike@gorgo

I work for the Oklahoma Dept of Transportation, where we have [among
other critters] altogether too many 8100's and about 600 3270-class
devices.

There is an IBM manual which gives detailed info on how 3270's behave
and are to be used; as I'm at home and it's at work, I can't give
you a title or order number. Call your local IBM branch office and
get the marketing folk to run through the KWIC index of IBM manuals
with you. If you have any 3270's at your shop, you may be able
to get a freebie copy as something to which the site is entitled; else,
you will most likely have to fork over a buck or two.

The 8100 machines come in three flavors [81x0, x=3,4,5] and run either
DPPC or DPCX. Both are ugly, but I can't say much more about porting
stuff without knowing which you have. We have DPCX, but some folks up
the street have DPPX and I can draw on their expertise.

I much prefer more rational machines - even IBM mainframes.
