[comp.sys.misc] IBM-RT : Delivery problems

rcw@qetzal.UUCP (sysop) (06/15/87)

Our company is a VAR for IBM-RTs. We put our software on the
machines, then package complete systems for customers.

In February, a client ordered the following:

1. 1 Model 115
2. 1 Model 125
3. 1 474meg scsi hard disk drive
4. 1 megapel monitor
5. Ethernet/Distributed Services software
6. Baseband adaptors
7. An operating system to support all this stuff (AIX 2.1)
8. Set of i/o cables for 4port serial adaptors.

We ordered this stuff in February, and were confident that we
could install the site by the end of May. To date, we have
received #1,5,and 7.

When we received the model 115, we put the operating system (7) on
it, and low and behold, it would not boot up. We called IBM, who
said, "so sorry, we'll have it fixed by monday." To there credit, they
did. However, it makes me wonder how many RTs are actually out there
in the field!

We have been given dates as late as early September for the rest
of the stuff. We ordered #8 months and months ago. Where are they?

Are we alone in this sort of experience? We selected IBM because
we thought they would be more reliable in terms of hardware and
support than a previous vendor. Wrong on both counts it seems.
We can't continue to go with IBM if this is the way we are going
to be treated. Is our experience unique?

If anyone from IBM is out there reading this, and feels they can
help us, don't hesitate to call me. I feel we have utilized the
normal channels, but that still isn't getting our customers their
system.

There are approximately 3 RT's out there.

Now, seriously......

It doesn't seem that anyone in the real world buys RT's. I don't blame them.
We're afflicted with them here at CMU because IBM owns us. But at least we
have a 4.2 of sorts, not sysV. I'll take a sun3 any day...
