[comp.sys.misc] mini-supers?

br@wucs1.UUCP (Bill Ross) (02/10/88)

I am looking for a machine to support a user community of 2000 students
in our Engineering School. Currently we use a network of 11/750's and
microvaxen running 4.3. What I am looking for should have most of these
features:

o Runs good 4.3 with Sun NFS, RPC

	o Provides 30-50 Mips (11/780 = about 1 Mip)

o Supports 100+ concurrent users running real applications
(spice, ctrlc, macsyma, ada, troff, etc..)

o If a parallel machine, should provide a single process with
at least 5 Mips of cpu (no 68000 based parallel machines
with only 1 processor per process need apply)

o Price (without disks, tapes) of $250-$500k

What machines should I be looking at? Some I know of are the Elxsi, Sequent,
Encore and Trace. Does anyone have opinions on these machines?

Thanks for any ideas.

Bill Ross
