I'm looking for a good and affordable lap top IBM PC-compatible. I'm kind of interested in the USA Micro laser compact XT, something I saw advertised in the back of Byte. However, I am new at this and I don't really know what is out there. Any opinions or pointers? Thanks, ------ Tom Conte Center for Supercomputing Research & Development University of Illinois The opinions expressed are my own, of course. uucp: ...!uiucdcs!uicsrd!conte bitnet: conte@uicsrd.csrd.uiuc.edu arpanet: conte@uicsrd.csrd.uiuc.edu

Any opinions or pointers? > Are you interested in lap tops or just small computers? If you are talking about the machine I think you are the compact XT is most definitely not a lap top. Lap tops have self contained power and a screen the XT has neither. Portables have self contained screens and a handle but still require AC power. The compact XT is just a slotless PC clone small, cheap, non-expandable but with many built in features for the price. If you are really interested in lap tops check out computer shopper. There are good examples of the genre from Toshiba, Sharp, Datavue, Zenith, NEC Radio Shack and no doubt others. Prices run the gamut from $700-upmtifrantz gazillion dollars. David Albrecht
