[comp.sys.misc] Bitnet Woes

JUNGER@CWRU.BITNET (05/03/88)

I have two problems: one is simple; the other I fear is complex.

The simple problem is that I cannot find a server that
redistributes INFO-MICRO on bitnet. Is there one?

The more complicated problem is perhaps not one that should
be addressed to this list, but I do not know of a more appropriate
place to seek help. The SIMTEL20 software archives are available on
bitnet from two servers that I know of: LISTSERV@RPICICGE and
TRICKLE@TREARN. I have no trouble getting directories from these
servers with the /PDDIR command and I can get files with the /PDGET
command. Unfortunately when I receive the files I cannot read them
if they are in ASCII and cannot unarchive them if they are in ARC
format. When I examined them in debug they appeared to be royally
scrambled; stripping off the high bits did not make the supposed
ASCII files more intelligible. I also brought over a supposed EXE
file and I could not disassemble it. It certainly wasn't an
80x86 file, at least not one that could run under MSDOS.

The machine I use on bitnet is a VAX--a micro VAX, I believe--
running VMS. The problem is not that the files are in NETDATA format.
We ran a test and I was able to receive a NETDATA file with no
difficulty. I am pretty sure that I have the same problem
with both servers, but must of the scrambled files came from the
TREARN server, which, even though it is way off in Turkey, is much
more responsive, probably because it is very new.

To find out about the TREARN server if you are on bitnet
and running VMS

        SEND TRICKLE@TREARN /HELP

or on IBM machines give the corresponding TELL command.

I would most appreciate any assistance with either of my
problems. Direct replies to me would be preferable, since I am
not on the list. I can, however, normally find copies on another
machine that I have intermittant access to, so postings will do
in a pinch. I will summarize the replies if they appear of interest.

All of the foregoing is subject, of course, to this
message getting through the keepers of the gates.

        Thanking you all in advance,

                                        I am,
                                                Sincerely yours,
                                                Peter D. Junger
