I want to get a 2400 baud modem for a friend who has a PC Clone running MSDOS 3.x (x, I believe, equals 2). I can get a fairly good price on a Volksmodem and one from Practical Peripherals. (I hope that I got those names right). The Practical Peripherals cost $20 more. My friend will probably use Procomm (and perhaps Kermit) but may want to use other communications programs. My questions are: Should I avoid either of these two modems? and, if the answer to the first question is no, Is there any reason to prefer one over the other?

Practical Peripherals makes a very good modem. Many people in many newsgroups own the PP 2400 baud modem (I have seen 15+ glowing endorsements, and just one person who's having problems [his modem is probably fried & will probably be replaced under warranty]). One local person I know purchased several modems, was unhappy with the error rates (5-10 spurious character per hour), and returned them. Finally he bought a practical peripherals modem and he's very satisfied. The extra $20 for the PP. modem is probably worth it. The modem is guaranteed Hayes compatible or your money back.
