Several persons have asked in these groups whether the deletion of the news.stargate newsgroup was intentional. It was. In various earlier articles in news.stargate, we at Stargate Information Services (the organization that operates the stargate data project) suggested that we no longer needed an entire newsgroup, since we now conduct the bulk of our correspondence via direct mailing lists and there are other news.* groups that would be appropriate for occasional netnews postings about stargate that needed to reach a wider audience. The news.stargate group simply was not needed, and was gradually turning into a place where various people were posting joke messages about eniac computers, punched tape and cards, and other similar topics. None of those postings were from persons connected with the actual stargate project. The backbone had earlier discussed with stargate the appropriateness of deleting the news.stargate group, and the decision was made that the correct time had arrived and the backbone performed the deletion. --- While the news.stargate group was no longer needed, stargate itself is alive and working toward the expansion of existing services and the establishment of new services. Stargate is a continuing project involving the transmission of data directly to subscribers using satellite, cable TV, and other video-based technologies (the primary data feed at this time is on Superstation TBS).
