I know this is not UNIX related but it is, nevertheless, urgent. The problem involves a Wang VS 80 system. A major file has been damaged such that the primary and alternate index blocks are in- valid. Since the backup program does not notify the user of such problems, this condition has penetrated all available backups, back to a month ago. It has been entirely futile to access this file using such utilities as copy, copy with reorganization, create, and display (record access mode) to say nothing about trying to read the file dynamically, randomly, or sequentially. However, in displaying the file in block access mode it is possi- ble to read the data blocks. Is there a way of accessing this file in block or hex mode such that it is possible to rewrite the records? If so, how does one determine the block number and not the relative block number? Please contact me, Bill Steward, at !cmcl2!rocky2!steward or my brother, John Steward, at The National Audubon Society (212) 946-9266, collect! Bless the soul who reads this, understands it, and can point the way to a solution.
