I had been following the topic "Let's talk OCR" over the past few weeks with some interest, but not saving it. All of a sudden it turned out that we got a grant of some money here at the University that we have to spend ***NOW*** (use it or lose it). I have suggested, based purely on hearsay, that we buy an Apple Scanner and Omnipage in order to do OCR. Therefore I am very interested in hearing from anyone with comments on this combination, either pro or con so that we can go ahead with confidence, or avoid buying a loser. We have in the neighborhood of 2 kilobucks. Please E-Mail me back comments directly as time is of the essence. I will post a summary on the net if a consensus emerges. After talking with a number of people, the general opinion of OmniPage with an Apple scanner is that it is a very workable package. Unfortunately, it requires either a Mac II or an SE with accelerator board - plus 4 Meg of memory. We don't have one of the larger machines available at this time to drive the software, so we are now thinking of using the Apple Scanner with either Read-IT! from Oldeuvi Software, or possibly Textscan from New Image. I would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who has experience with either of these packages. I've seen the Read-it! review in Mac User, but have no information on Textscan at all. Again - many thanks to those who responded previously. -Bob Wier at Flagstaff, Arizona Northern Arizona University NAU Box 15600 *usual disclaimers* Flagstaff, Az. ...arizona!naucse!rwi 86011 602-523-2052
