[comp.sys.misc] extremely cheap single-board computers

secrist@msdsws.DEC.COM (Richard Secrist, Digital Equip. Corp. USA) (11/20/88)

Does anyone know of a source of extremely cheap (n <= $30) single
board computers a la ZX-81s for use as dedicated controllers around
the house ? I have a few projects in mind but don't want to put the
time into them unless I have a few of these SBCs so when I fry/lose
them the projects aren't worthless anymore.

I suspect that you may be able to pick up Xerox 820-I's (a reworked BB I, very
similar to the Kaypro except that the drives are usually SS only - the second
version allows DS 5 1/4" drives, I think) for about that price. It comes with
64K of RAM, a monitor in ROM, a disk controller, CRT display circuitry, etc.
It is a CP/M machine and was heavily supported by Microsystems magazine for a
number of years - lots of tech info.
