[comp.sys.misc] Xenix/Informix/Altos question

catone@dsl.cis.upenn.edu (Tony Catone) (08/23/89)

Hello. A friend of mine without net access is running Informix 3.2 (circa
1984, pre-SQL Informix) under Xenix 3.1A on an Altos 986 (interchangeable with
the Altos 586). His company uses Informix for their payroll and billing
receivables. Of course, the Altos box is dying. They have a Nec Powermate
(an XT compatible, as far as I can tell) with a 40 meg hard disk. Will the
Powermate run a version of Xenix, either out of the box or with the addition
of a 286 accelerator card? Better yet, do Xenix versions maintain media (i.e.
disk) compatibility, so that they can transfer their data and text files
directly instead of through uucp/whatever? If the Powermate won't run Xenix,
what are the most compatible pieces of Informix under DOS to buy so that the
applications can be moved over? Losing multiuser capability is no problem,
it's no longer needed.

Thanks in advance for any help. I don't think this is of very general
interest, so feel free to reply to me directly, but I'll scan the newsgroups
involved so followups are fine too.
