Here at the Unisys UNIX Portation Center, I get to receive many "interesting" requests. The latest is a request from an educational institution that wants to train students on IBM 360/370 assembly language (BAL) without investing in an IBM mainframe. Does anybody know of a tool that translates IBM BAL to some UNIX-type language like C or Pascal (or even 80386 or 68000 assembler?). How about a 360/370/BAL interpreter? I know there was one in the early 1970s (used in conjunction with a programming text by Stu Madnick et al.), but I suspect that it has fallen into desuetude long hence. Let's not waste bandwidth on discussing whether this educational institution is wise to wish to do this... I just want to know if somebody has heard of such a converter or interpreter.
