[comp.sys.misc] VGA monitors

BAUGHMANKR@CONRAD.APPSTATE.EDU (07/22/90)

Greetings all:

I want to upgrade from my CGA monitor to VGA. Could someone explain the
difference between a Super-VGA 1024 x 768 monitor and Multi-sync
1024 x 768 monitor? Is it the difference between digital and analog input?

What would be the difference in performance between a video card with 256 K
on board memory and a card with 512 K memory?

I am considering a CTX monitor because the price is right. Any comments on
that brand?

Thanks in advance.

Ok.. a Multi-Sync will handle ALL frequencies in a certain range, a super
VGA card can only handle SPECIFIC freq's in the same range.

Why do you care ?

Well, every resolution is a new frequency , my 3 yr old m-sync went from
standard VGA (when that was the big thing) to my 1024x768 Super VGA BECAUSE
it ould adapt to resolutions that maybe were not available when it was built.

If you get a Super VGA monitor , and next year some new resolution mode
comes out , odds are you will be stuck.

VGA monitors are ALL analog.

Higer resolutions = more RAM needed. I dont think there are ANY 256k boards
that go above 640x480x256 colors. The math doesn't work out.
