This past summer, a friend was telling me something he'd read, in Byte, PC Magazine, one of those. According to this article, the components which make up monitors, especially EGA's, are all made by just a handful of companies. This being the case, so the argument goes, it essentially wouldn't matter whether you bought a Zenith, Magnavox, or Discount Mailorder monitor. The insides being the same, you get virtually the same quality anywhere. I may soon have to replace my monitor, and would be curious to know whether anyone else has heard or read anything like this. Frank: Half-right... I believe the components quality is the same between the monitors, but it DOES matter which monitor you buy. Thhe resolution is a BIG difference. A difference you may or may not be attuned to, but can end up giving you a head-ache in the end. It's all in how the components are put together, and which ones they use. I wouldn't have anything against buying a KMART brand monitor if, when looking at the resolution, scan lines, and other factors, it was comparable to another monitor that I didn't get head-aches while using. Usually, however, the cheaper the monitor, the less design work, and less expensive parts went into building it. Rich

True, although only a few vendors make the glass bulbs for monitors, and several more make the electronics, these are available in a WIDE variety of price and resolution ranges...even say within a given family and dot pitch (the smallest blert an electron beam can make on the screen) prices and resolution vary greatly... This is not to say that lower price brands are not the equivalent of the big vendors like NEC, Mitsubishi, etc..
