[net.wanted] Can you justify UNIX over VMS for teaching and research?

jmrobinson@watbun (05/20/83)

I am trying to put together a short manifesto
outlining why Unix (or some high quality computing environ-
ment) is critical for a CS program. If I can convince the
administrative higher-ups that CS will wither on the vine
without Unix, they may just go for it [instead of VMS].

What kind of help can you give me:

 - more languages (C, LISP, YACC, ...) ?
 - familiarity with another system (a widely used system) ?
 - a more productive programming environment ?
 - communication with the outside world (USENET) ?
 - a working example of how software should be designed ?
 - a fertile ground for senior year student projects (what am I going to
find under VMS for 35 student projects next year??) ?
thanks
