[comp.sys.misc] LANs, PCs, and Unix v.s. DOS servers

moore@oravax.UUCP (Sally Moore) (05/07/91)

Information needed please: (apologies if this is one of the
most asked questions.....)

I am researching a LAN setup with PC's connected
to a server. I am interested in all pro's and con's
for setups. My potential site would include the following:

A Dos-based (33 MHz, 386 based machine w/8MB mem, and 300-
  600 Mb disk storage --or--
A UNIX-based server (probably a SUN since that's what the rest
  of the network consists of...)
Ethernet cards for the PCs. (any favorites? definitely DON'T buy?)
Transceiver Connectors to either a) twisted pair or b) thin
  ethernet
Software (PC-NFS?)

I'd love opinions from any users of any of the above mentioned
*stuff*. I'd be happy to publish an overview if requested.
Please send e-mail response to moore@oracorp.com.
Thanks.
