[comp.sys.nsc.32k] My 2 cents..

ca063@unocss.UUCP (Thomas Davis) (11/17/88)

Ok, like the subject says, here's my 2 cents on what I've heard the
past couple of days..

First, I have to agree with the guys that want the system to be under
$1k. That's a complete system, as complete as possible (if it has to be a
kit, so be it!)

Now, I am currently working on a 32016 system (it's in the wire-wrap
stages. If it helps the group any, I'll donate the schematics, (sorry, they
are not on tissue paper, so they ARE readable (I have a grade riding on them
and the system)) and any help I can give in the hardware part.

As for the OS, I would like to see a UNIX style interface, but the
kernel can be ANYTHING. If the source is public domain, that's even better!
So what does that leave? Well, there's Minix, XINU, and (coming soon to
comp.sources.misc I hope) UZI. The biggest problem I see with all of this
is not chosing what OS, but just getting the basic tools prepared (IE, 'C'
compiler that doesn't need 2megs of memory to run.)

So, the only question left on my mind is:

Where can I get that 'C' compiler (I have GCC running here for the 32k),
and the assembler that it uses? I would love to start work on Minix (and I'm
a hardware type of guy that can program! :-)

Well, got to go back to work! (It's hell working 34 hours a week, and
12 credit hours of school.. :-( (can't wait to graduate.. 3 more semesters!)
