Well, here I go again... I just bought an 80MB ST296N for my pc532. I plugged it in, and can read the disk, but only with small reads (about 10 blocks or less). It can SOMETIMES make a read with about 10 to 15 blocks after a few failures... Here is a (short) transcript of what happens. My copy of ANSI X3.131-1986 should arrive in the next few days, but I wonder if that will help much. Does anyone have a phone number for Seagate, so I can order the product/technical/OEM manual for the thing. The ONLY number that came with the disk is a "do-it-yourself'ers" 900 number (1st minute free $2.00/minute after) and a little booklet telling me how to install a 3.5 or 5.25 MFM/RLL/SCSI drive into a PC-XT/AT/Clone. I really don't want to risk $20 on some machine recording just to get a phone number to call to order a real manual... --- Power up here --- NS32000 ROM Debugger Version: Tue Jul 03 09:44:00 PDT 1990 RAM free above 0x1554 Command (? for help): read 0 2000 1 SCSI ok with recovery, code 0x10, logical address 0x0 Command (? for help): write 0 2000 1 SCSI failure, key 0x4, code 0x14, log adr 0x0, sense buf 0x1530 SCSI failure, key 0x4, code 0x14, log adr 0x0, sense buf 0x1530 SCSI failure, key 0x4, code 0x14, log adr 0x0, sense buf 0x1530 SCSI failure, key 0x4, code 0x14, log adr 0x0, sense buf 0x1530 SCSI failure, key 0x4, code 0x14, log adr 0x0, sense buf 0x1530 SCSI failure, key 0x4, code 0x14, log adr 0x0, sense buf 0x1530 SCSI WRITE, block 0 failed even after retries Error 1 Command (? for help): dump 2000 200 00002000 33 C0 8E D8 | BE 16 7C EB | 02 CD 10 B4 | 0E 33 DB AC 3.....|......3.. 00002010 0A C0 75 F5 | EB FE 59 6F | 75 72 20 6E | 65 77 20 53 ..u...Your new S 00002020 65 61 67 61 | 74 65 20 64 | 72 69 76 65 | 20 6D 75 73 eagate drive mus 00002030 74 20 62 65 | 20 69 6E 73 | 74 61 6C 6C | 65 64 20 74 t be installed t 00002040 6F 20 62 65 | 63 6F 6D 65 | 20 62 6F 6F | 74 61 62 6C o become bootabl 00002050 65 0D 0A 0D | 0A 42 6F 6F | 74 20 66 72 | 6F 6D 20 79 e....Boot from y 00002060 6F 75 72 20 | 44 4F 53 20 | 64 69 73 6B | 65 74 74 65 our DOS diskette 00002070 2C 20 74 68 | 65 6E 20 74 | 79 70 65 2E | 2E 2E 0D 0A , then type..... 00002080 0D 0A 20 20 | 20 20 20 43 | 3A 49 4E 53 | 54 41 4C 4C .. It's in a PS/2 cabinet and is completely populated (as far as that goes), including the bipolar RAM. (I stole the 532 for my PC-532. Before that it worked fine.) You can plug your 532 in it and be up and running. It's not a PC-532, though. > -- > David L. Well, I finally got some usable manuals for my disk. I got the thing formatted, and even got the minix kernel image and the floppy disk image written to it. I can even read the stuff back in from the monitor, but when I run minix I get: NS32000 ROM Debugger Version: Tue Jul 03 09:44:00 PDT 1990 RAM free above 0x1554 Command (? for help): read 0 2000 100 Command (? for help): run 2000 Minix 1.3 kernel version: Sat Jul 14 18:47:33 PDT 1990 Pages of user memory: 973 Start user pages: 0x33000 SCSI: timeout SCSI failure, key 0x5, code 0x24, log adr 0x0, sense buf 0xC462 SCSI: timeout SCSI failure, key 0x5, code 0x24, log adr 0x0, sense buf 0xC462 SCSI: timeout SCSI failure, key 0x5, code 0x24, log adr 0x0, sense buf 0xC462 SCSI: timeout SCSI failure, key 0x5, code 0x24, log adr 0x0, sense buf 0xC462 SCSI: timeout SCSI failure, key 0x5, code 0x24, log adr 0x0, sense buf 0xC462 SCSI: timeout SCSI READ, sector 514 failed even after retries Unrecoverable disk error on device 2/2, block 1 I have been able to run minix from a RAM disk, but this seems to be beyond it. In case your wondering, sense key 5 is illegal request or bad parameter in the command descriptor block. Code 24 is illegal field in CDB. Any suggestions, or offers to help???
