[comp.sys.ti] TI's DEMISE

was@pbhye.UUCP (Joe Wasik) (08/13/87)

How low can TI fall?

The poor TI-Pro has been discontinued.
The little TI-99a has been discontinued.
There is a great big Business-Pro, but nobody trusts TI to buy it.
A reputation for customer service that rivals that of used car dealers.
Microsoft does not want to develop another OS for the TI.

And now, so I read, this net (comp.sys.ti) has been rated as
having the lowest readership of all nets on this network.
(See California Usenet Summary Report for June 87).

Out of 247 nets, it ranked 247th.
It has only 45 readers, which is 0.4% (!) of the audience.
It averages 8 messages per month. (Doesn't that seem high?)
Only 7% of the 45 readers bother to participate.

While this doesn't exactly bring tears to my eyes, it does make an
unfortunate point: nobody out there owns a TI-Pro besides me.

I don't know why I even bother to post this. The statistics show
that there are only one or two others of your out there (7% of 45).
I bet you guys are on vacation.

Should somebody accidently read this and is dumb enough to reply,
please include your entire path so I can sell you my PC. ;-)

Thanks.

Oh, there are some of the unique elite still around (45 of us, huh?).
Actually, I don't even own any TI equipment, but I bought a portable
Pro for a friend of mine a few years ago and am just trying to keep
up on things for her. (I'm also waiting for a "real deal" on a hard
disk for her to come along *8-)

welll... I don't have a PRO, but I've got one of the
99/4a's. Works great too. I keep hoping others with similar
equipment will decide to unload their systems at upgrade time
and offer them to other comp.sys.ti readers (both of us!) who
might be interested.
An expansion box, extra memory, disk drive, etc. would
really look nice on my unit, but I can't justify paying one
of the second-source places for them. I CAN justify accepting
the stuff from someone, even if it doesn't quite work! {:)

Ok, Ok!

Here is my first posting to this news group. I *DO* own a TI Pro already
so, please, do not try to sell me yours. I used to work at TI and they
had this great deal where they discounted the things and then gave us no
interest loans that we paid off through payroll deduction. I even have
the graphics card and some other stuff! I left TI 2 1/2 years ago and
have been carrying the thing around since then. I get the brilliant idea
(?) a month or so ago to use it to drive my Yaesu FRG-8800 receiver. What
a mistake. The rf generated by my Pro all but blanketed 20 mHz of band-
width! Oh well. Now I am reading the Amiga news and thinking of selling
my Pro. If you find a buyer, see if he has a brother or sister!

No offense to my old TI friends, I'd love to hear from you!

All I've seen here are followup articles--if there was originally some news,
could someone re-mail it to me?

And I'll repeat the query I made (without response) a few months ago: is
anyone out there aware of a second source for memory upgrades? Or know how
to adapt IBM-compatible boards for TI's slightly different bus? My Pro
Portable is still quite adequate for most of my personal use, but I
occasionally need more than the 256K I bought it with...

Or did the original posting have to do with someone dumping used systems or
parts?

Thanks for any help,

Sigh. How would you like to have been a developer of the Pro as I was?
Note that the Organization line does NOT say: Texas Instruments, Inc.

If I were to sell my Pro, I'd be selling my child!

Disclaimer1: I didn't speak for TI when I worked for them.
Why would I try to speak for them now?

Disclaimer2: I couldn't speak for APR if I wanted to.

Quite a long time ago I posted a set of patches which would get the PC version
of Turbo Pascal working on the Pro. Those patches were only a beginning. I
was hoping that others would take an interest and we could unite and get more
of the PC-oriented features working.

I never found out if others were interested as our computer here died horribly
and I had no net access for many weeks. During those weeks, there may have
been some followups and expressions of interest, but, if so, I never knew
about it.

I have very little sympathy for anyone who reads this group and
still feels he/she is all alone. As I have repeatedly stated there
are many TI PRO user groups many of which are quite active and
supportive. If you are serious about keeping your old friend,
JOIN A USER GROUP NOW! You will pay for the membership in
supply savings alone, and you may get some new friends to boot.

If you need help in finding a User Group, send me a note, and I
will try to point you in the right direction!

P.S. I got two TI PROs - both happy!

I just got my "DirecTIons" magazine today and wanted to check it before I
answered. Three companies that I can find ...

	1) Persyst... Will have a board to upgrade upto 768K 'stead of 512K
as before. Should be available in Aug/Sept. I used their
first board for TIPCs in 'bout all the TIPC's I used whilest
I was at TI. I used the early multifunction with serial port,
battery-backedup clock, assorted software with rarely any
problems. Details on new board upgrade from "Second Source",
		214-276-5525 (not Persyst).

	2) Western Automation... A variety of boards including memory
upgrades. Current adds show a 20- or 40-Meg hardcard
(winnie on a card). Don't know if it's out yet.
		W-A, Boulder, CO 800-227-4637

	3) The TIPC Network... Hard drives, Memory (sells W-A products),
and other option boards and software.
POBox 2414, Sioux City, IA 800-233-TIPC

	4) EPIC Sales...in Garland, TX Drives, W-A expansion boards.
214-272-5724 I've dealt with these folks. Usually
		pretty good.

Er.. I lied - Four.

Disclaimer: I make no warrantee about these companies or their products.
I am in no way connected with them or TI ('cept for a coupla shares of
TI common stock).

Good luck!
