[comp.sys.ti] Texas Instruments PC-Compatible

lains@world.std.com (Layne L Ainsworth) (06/12/91)

I have this old (but still working until recently) TI-PPC (portable
professional computer). It won't boot up and the manual doesn't list the
error. TI doesn't make the computer (or any PC-compatibles) anymore,
so service is not very available. TI has a manual set (about $200 for
the pair) that I could buy, but I don't want to if it's a really easy
fix.

These are the symptoms:

Power up and:

1) All three LEDs on mother board go on. (red, yellow, green)
2) Immediately, the green light goes off.
3) About .5 seconds later, yellow light goes off, and green turns on.
4) About 1 second after that, green light goes off, and red stays on forever

The screen now says:

** system error ** 0004

Why am I telling you this? If any of you has ever worked on one of these
things, I would appreciate the answer to either "What does that mean?" or
"Who would know what that means?", preferably in the Boston area, but I'm
not too picky.

Thanks a lot.

What I believe (Part IV): This is a pine tree. Many parts are edible.

I just happen to have this handy:
According to the TI PC Operating Instructions Manual, as reprinted in
"DirecTIons" magazine April 85:
System errors 1-9 indicate "Problems within the system unit, such as a
defective diskette drive controller. Have the system unit serviced."

I don't know of anyone who can service a TI PC any more.
I don't recommend buying TI manuals. I bought an early copy of the
hardware reference manual and found it nearly worthless,
and I doubt if the later version is better.

If you find any better source of information, please post it or send
me a note. Good luck with the repair.

I'll sell you my old TI PC if you want. :-)

For thos of you out there who still have TIPCs....

Yes there still are several users groups across the nation that can provide
a fair amount of support and software.

Also a board is available that makes the TIPC IBM compatible, thus allowing use
of IBM software.

Most of the users groups are very helpful, you may have to join to get the full
benefit, but they generally don't charge much (25.00/yr for the one I'm in).

Anyway, if you wan more info send me e-mail and I'll see what I can do about
putting you in touch with the appropriate ppl.
