[comp.sys.atari.8bit] Need much info on Supra 1200at

mahlen@brahms.Berkeley.EDU.UUCP (02/19/87)

I just bought a Supra 1200at and darned if the documentation is meagre!
What little there is claims that this is, in fact, an Avatex 1200. It only
came with a piece of software called Smart Terminal, which is neither. I
would really like to be able to edit files remotely, and am sort of willing
to write the emulator (though i'd rather not), but i have no clue as to how
to send the modem commands. The modem came with a single serial -> rs232
converter (it's a serial cable, then a little box, then the rs232 cable).
I've tried making the RS232.COM file from Indus Dos 2.35i the AUTORUN.SYS
file on a disk, but the R: handler either isn't loading or isn't installing
itself. Does anyone have a real terminal program for the Supra 1200 (great!)
or at least know how to let me talk to my modem without using Smart Terminal?
I used to think i was a pretty competant (sp) programmer, but this
tele-communications stuff leaves me baffled. Any ideas?

p.s., the modem commands run like ATDTphoneno and >A. Does this protocall
look familiar or have name?

"If you smile too much, your neck will melt."
"If you nech too much, your smile will melt."

p.p.s, Does anyone know the net address of Atari? I think an old friend of mine
works there. Mark Cerny, where are you, this is your past calling....

I have seen two flavors of modem handlers on Ataris: The R: handler, which
is usually downloaded from the 850 interface or equivalent, and the T: handler
which is usually loaded from disk. The AUTORUN.SYS on DOS-XL disks just
loads the R: handler from the 850, and won't help if your interface is not
prepared to download. You did not say if your interface has any recognizable
name. I would check the disk which came with it for any files which look
like a handler (which you would have to append to any modem program you
want to use with it), and maybe even some documentation.

ATDT# is a Hayes modem command, which means that you have a Hayes compatable
modem. This is the industry standard in modems, so you should be able to find
someone with a Hayes who can give you a copy of the command list.

If your modem hooks up to the 850 interface, then any good telecom program
(I use HomeTerm) should work fine.
