[comp.sys.atari.8bit] OMNIVIEW, UNIX, vi

njd@ihlpm.UUCP (03/30/87)

I have managed to get CDY's OmniCom (some call it Omniterm) VT100
emulator that uses his OMNIVIEW 80-column chip to work OK, except
that I am having a problem. When I login to this UNIX system
(essentially System V Rls 2.0, actually UTS 5.?.? on an Amdahl)
and bring up vi, as soon as the editor clears the screen, OmniCom
"locks up" on me (no cursor or response to keys). The same
problem occurs when I'm in "more" and I type 'q' to quit. The
most likely cause I can think of is that the emulator is not
compatible with the "vt100" termcap/terminfo entry on this
system. Can anyone who uses OmniCom with UNIX and vi, more, etc.
help me out? (If nothing else, a termcap or terminfo entry to
try, compare, etc. would help.) OmniCom is quite happy when I
use it to log in to DELPHI (the screen even clears between Forum
messages, at least in the Atari SIG where I spend my time).

Thanks in advance.

Re my last posting: I had mis-read the OMNIVIEW manual. It's
the RAMDISK that is said not to work with DOSs that "hide
themselves," like DOS XL in extended mode. I'll have to try it
in UNextended (as-shipped) mode to see if at least that works.
Since OmniCom (and OmniWriter also I hear) does not work with DOS
XL, (and I don't like Atari DOS 2 much, and I have Percoms,) I am
thinking about buying SpartaDos anyway. I am disappointed that
the chip works with DOS XL but the programs do not - WHY?
Another disappointment that I share with Fred Sullivan is that
OmniCom does not map incoming characters properly for UNIX use,
i.e. one sees the corresponding ATASCII graphics char's. instead
of "{}~`". The doc. for OmniCom says that OMNIVIEW does
something with these, and offers an update if needed, but my
opinion is that the terminal software, not the chip, should do
the translation. Why throw away Atari's characters for ALL
applications? "No fair." (Besides, my OMNIVIEW isn't any older
than my copy of OmniCom, really. What gives?)

P.S. I hope that CDY puts a key click into OmniCom in the near
future. I never realized how much I depend on it, especially on
a 130XE!
