[comp.sys.atari.8bit] A-Rogue

Okay now. I've had A-Rogue for about a week, having bought the disk at
B. Dalton out of anxiety. This is what -I- think of it.
The BASIC program is 125 sectors, which leaves mucho room for improvement.
And the game could use some.
The character set is a nine sector file and is beautiful. Graphics 0, by the
way.
Now to the program.
A board is small, a bit less than one screen, made smaller by the fact that one
space is a 2x2 to 3x3 character block. There are twenty-eight monsters,
varying only in three attributes: AC, HP, and level they are found on.
You can't see a monster coming. When you step into its square, it attacks
you --- but such a routine would be very hard on such a small level.
(How far can you run?:-)) There are three spells, Heal, Teleport, and
Fireball, and each is instantly identified when you pick it up. There
are also seven potions, which in typical Rogue fashion you must DRINK to
find out whether you'll die or not.:-) The game is fast enough, as it's
mainly strategy.
You have to get to the tenth level and find the Jewel of Taldra. You don't
have to get back up --- the Jewel teleports you home.
And finally, there are no rooms in the typical Rogue sense. There ARE
chambers, however, where passages meet to form a small cavern.
BUT, it's overall a good game, considering the size and language. I'm thinking
of modifying it to make it bigger and better.

I've said my piece.
