In response to: John R. Dunning <jrd@STONY-BROOK.SCRC.Symbolics.COM> The 'voices' on the 800 and the serial bus ARE controlled by the same chip. If I remember correctly, one voice channel is used in sending serial data out to the serial output pin, and another is used in receiving data from the serial input pin. I was going to say that this still leaves two voices left for making noises, but I think the voices are linked together two at a time in order to get better frequency resolution for the serial bus frequencies. So you can't use the voices for making sounds without screwing up the serial bus setup, i.e., they're not independent. Details are given in the hardware (or operating system manual) if you can locate a copy of that.
