Not mentioned in the product announcement is whether compatability with the 1050 also means compatability with the older 810 drives. Do we assume that "compatability" means you can copy old single density disks onto new double/doubles? Walt Lazear

There should be no problem converting your old disks from single to double density. OSS is writing ADOS, and from what I've read it will be able to read DOS 2.0, 4.6, 2.5, etc. It won't read DOS 4.0, 3.0 or SpartaDOS disks. -- -Marc L. Excuse my ignorance... but what is DOS 4.6? Will ADOS be able to read the 'Atari' format double density disks (these are just standard format disks which have 256 bytes/sector instead of 128) used by everyone else besides Atari? I bet SpartaDOS will have a new version out soon after the ADOS/XF551 combo hits the market. -- Dean Brunette {ucbvax, etc.}!hplabs!oliveb!olivej!dragon Olivetti Advanced Technology Center _____ _____ __|__ _____ 20300 Stevens Creek Blvd. | | _____| | | Cupertino, CA 95014 |_____| |_____| |__ |_____

DOS 4.6F was released by the old Atari. It is similar to DOS 2.0. As I said before ADOS should be able to read any Atari formatted disk except for DOS4, or 3. As for SpartaDOS, version 3.2 will support the new drive. Look at the options for XINIT, there is one the for a DS/DD drive. -- -Marc L. > I bet SpartaDOS will have a new version out soon after the ADOS/XF551 combo > hits the market. ICD's original reason for not releasing the SpartaDOS X cartridge (aka SpartaDOS 3.3) was that they were waiting for Atari's 3.5" drive to become available. Now the 3.5" drive is a 5.25", and SpartaDOS X is STILL not ready. While chatting with ICD on 6/11, I was told not to worry, "we ARE working on it." That's OK, though: SpartaDOS 3.2 will indeed format DSDD drives, which I can assure you are very handy to have. I only hope Atari's new DSDD drive is faster than my generic ones... -- __________________________________ _____________________________ ARPA: knutsen@rutgers.edu | What should I | GEnie GE Mail: M.KNUTSEN UUCP: {...}!rutgers.uucp!knutsen | put here? | The JACG BBS: (201)298-0161 ---------------------------------- -----------------------------

I talked to ICD at the summer CES a couple weeks ago and they said that SpartaDOS X (the cartridge) will support the new XF551 as well as the still born 3.5 inch drive. They seem very up-to-date on everything going on at Atari. Kit Kimes AT&T ISL Naperville, IL ...ihnp4!iwvae!kimes

He told me that the appearance of the SpartaDOS X cartridge is not delayed by any compatability problems with Atari's new drive (apparently, the new drive works fine w/SpartaDOS). Rather, they are bowing to user requests that SpartaDOS X work on the old 800s, with or without Axlon-compatible memory upgrades. This will take some extra coding. Apparently, they are rushing SpartaDOS at the expense of a fix to the MIO printer buffer, which is buggy. A shame for all those who own MIOs, but good news for those of us who can't wait for SpartaDOS on a cartridge. -- __________________________________ _____________________________ ARPA: knutsen@rutgers.edu | What should I | GEnie GE Mail: M.KNUTSEN UUCP: {...}!rutgers.edu!knutsen | put here? | The JACG BBS: (201)298-0161 ---------------------------------- -----------------------------

I wanted to see what it looks like (is it that thing in the pictures on the back of XE boxes?). At least the 8 bits aren't waiting for blitters :-) And a question: How many 8 bitters are using a mouse? How many would like to use a mouse? Is the software (such as RAOS) acceptable? Thanks for any replies. -- MANNERS: Just say no _t_h_a_n_k _y_o_u! Dragon Technology!! {hplabs, ames, sun, etc.}!oliveb!olivej!dragon

Unfortunately, the mouse and RAOS that was advertized by Zorbian Controls never came to pass. It was all vaporware and the company must now be out of business (if it was ever a company, they only had a box office number) because they do not answer the phone number that was listed in their ad. I also wrote them a letter but got no reply. Does anyone know if there is any GEM interface software available, PD or otherwise? Thanks... Kit Kimes AT&T-ISL Naperville, IL ...ihnp4!iwvae!kimes

There are two PD Gem-type interfaces available that I know of, darned if I can remember their names right now. Regardless, they _should_ be on CIS or GEnie. In my opinion, this type of interface for an 8-bit machine is unnecessary, and cannot fail to be too memory-hungry, slow, and limited to be useful. Go for SpartaDOS. -- __________________________________ _____________________________ ARPA: knutsen@rutgers.edu | What should I | GEnie GE Mail: M.KNUTSEN UUCP: {...}!rutgers.edu!knutsen | put here? | The JACG BBS: (201)298-0161 ---------------------------------- -----------------------------
