Depending on which Atari you have, you may or may not be able to get EXACT information from Atari. De Re Atari is WELL WORTH BUYING in any case. However, I would very strongly urge you to get Mapping The Atari, 1985 XL/XE edition if you have an XL or XE machine. This is the most informative collection of notes about system variables you'll ever find. Also, for assemby language programming, whether you're a beginner or an expert on other systems but new to the Atari, Assemby Language Programming for the Atari Computers, by Mark Chasin (a BYTE book) is superb and a MUST!!! for your library. It specifically explains Atari I/O and graphics programming, with numerous examples. You should also buy the ACTION! cartridge for those times when you want most of the power of assembly language without the price of slugging it out with the machine byte by byte. -John Sangster / jhs@mitre-bedford.arpa
