[comp.sys.atari.8bit] Desk Top Publishing Software

jgroves@hawk.ulowell.edu (BathTub Scum) (04/22/88)

Does anyne know of any Desk Top Publishing software for the 8-bit
other than "Typesetter" and "News Companion".

Out of these two, I prefer Typesetter, but they both require you
to re-type the "article" if you want it formatted differently.
And use "Plates" [Typesetter doesn't but I use 2 files for a full page]
for the output. They also both use single density ONLY for the
files [ACK!]... Limiting 3 "plates" per Single Sided diskette.

I have seen "Newsroom" by Springboard, for the Apple IIe, ETC...
Hasn't anyone done something similar for the ATARI??

Oh. While I'm here, can anyone recommend a repair-place for some
sick RANA 1000 drives??

NO! I don't have a .signature. What's it to you?

Last I heard, Newsroom was just being released for the Atari
8 bit computers. The port over was brought about by a massive
letter-writing campaign started by Antic magazine. Apparently
it worked. Antic promises to review Newsroom as soon as they
can get a copy (plus the 3 month publishing delay).

is a program similar to "Newsroom", by Springboard.

Actually, Springboard's "Newsroom" was ported to the Atari 8-bit recently. I'm
sure it is available. Contact Springboard for more information.

I have actually seen that program around recently. It is not too bad.

Another program you might look around for is the Dot Magic aka Daisy Dot II
which is ShareWare and is quite nice. Works with Dot Matrix printers of all
kinds, incorporates Graphics, and different fonts. It has been found to work
with the XMM801 and Star SG10 printers as well. Various sizes of fonts are
capable as well. A bit slow sometimes but really nice. IS there an 8 bit
depository like the atari.st.binaries for this sort of thing?

I think you are looking at the depository. I posted Daisy Dot II here a
while ago. I have found one problem in using it: it is often a pain to put
all the formatting commands in the file after you format it. Anyone want to
tackle a macro package for TextPRO to support DDot II? It is something I
thought about a while ago, but I am busy with my Plato terminal emulator
project.

Speaking of which, when I finally get it completed, I will be releasing it
on a "if you like it, send money"-type deal. The final version should allow
for touch-screen emulation (depending on memory constraints) and screen dumps
to disk (definitly (sp?)). A separate program will dump it to disk. I should
have a good beta version done in a month or two, but I won't be able to post
it to the net 'cause this account dies at the end of the semester. If I don't
get a new account by this fall, I will have a new mail address on our Plato
system here (we are wired into BITNET) & you can contact me there. I know this
may sound like an ego trip, but I am too tired to go back and erase it all.

I believe I saw such a macro package for Text Pro on Compu$erve a few months
ago. I think it was only intended to 'help' format text for Daisy Dot though.
I believe it was in data library number 5.
