[comp.sys.atari.8bit] RGB <--> Atari SETCOLOR conversion?

Lately I've gotten interested in the "GIF" file format for "universally
standardized" graphics (picture) files, and am considering writing a GIF
viewer for the Atari 8-bit computers.

However, part of the information in a GIF file is a "color pallette"
describing each of the colors to be used, in percentages of Red, Green,
and Blue. The GIF standard states that, in the event that the precise
RGB colors designated in the file can't be specified on the display hard-
ware, a "predefined" palette should be used, coming "as close as possible"
to the RGB spec.

Does anyone have information regarding the equivalence of Atari's "color
0 through 15, luminance 0 through 15" to percentage-mixtures of pure red,
green, and blue? Failing that, can anyone suggest a workable way of de-
termining same?

Thanks in advance,

   Chris Chiesa
