A friend of mine has built the device you have been describing and nominally sells it (it was some time ago but he likely has some units left.) It was called the Vigitizer, and came complete with software that allowed you to record, playback, modify the buffer, etc. Last I knew, mike and all it ws $30. I believe that the kinks demo mentioned that has been long available was created with this unit. In fact, at my house, 15 minutes before a demo to a local users group...
