[comp.sys.atari.8bit] Hard drive woes

  Help!

A friend and I have gotten a new 20 megabyte hard drive (half-height) for
use with a bulletin-board system. We are using ICD's hard drive kit, and got
everything assembled, partitioned, and formatted.

Problem is, no matter what we try, after a few days (maybe a week) of
reading/writing to partiton #2, we end up getting "Device done" (directory
scrambled) errors. It's not a physical error, since we can get the directory
and files to be read if we try often enough. Still, it's a MAJOR inconvience,
requiring lots of backup shuffling and code rewriting (development is a b*tch).

We're both 100% naive to the world of hard drives. Can anyone suggest a
few reasons why this is happening? We've heard something about hard drive
data "shifting" after lots of read/write operations; Is this it? Or is our
case loose and the vibrations are causing problems? Or maybe the hard drive
unit is not aligned properly?

We have NO IDEA what's going on. Plese help. (E-mail or post, as long as I
can read and reply) THANKS.

P.S. We're using the new SpartaDOS X cartridge, if that helps.
