Today I was pleased to find my new Happy 1050 Enhancement waiting for me when I got home from work, five weeks after sending in my order (with a personal check, which was said to induce a 3-week hold). Although the hardcopy documentation supplied doesn't cover the new features, in particular the MS-DOS read/write capability which I bought the unit for, a quick perusal of the Warp Speed Software disk revealed the utility and a description of its use. I'll try it out Real Soon Now. But the real surprise came when I booted the "OSS DOS XL (Single Density) Now with BUG/65" disk which I ordered for "true double-density capability". I was anxious to assure myself that this was simply an old, inaccurate label on the floppy. But I was totally unprepared for the menu which appeared: Atari DOS 3 Copyright 1983 Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Error 8: Cannot write MEM.SAV GAK!!! Needless to say, this menu does not agree with that described in the nice 200-page OSS DOS XL Reference Manual, but instead bears a striking resemblance to what I get after booting the floppy which came with my 1050 some years ago... right down to the output of the Files command to compare the directories on the two disks. So, does anyone know what has happened here, or why? Perhaps someone put the wrong master diskette in their duplicator by accident? Or maybe an employee decided to pull an April Fool's prank? Inquiring minds want to know... -- "There's something strange in your CPU ... Who ya gonna call? WORMBUSTERS!"
