[comp.sys.atari.8bit] Text editor

robby@vax1.acs.udel.EDU (Robert Spotts) (03/23/89)

Here's my problem...I'm currently fooling around with the Ace C Compiler,
and using a Word Processor to write the source code. Everything would be
fine, BUT my Word Processor(Speed Script) doesn't let me exit back to DOS so
I can recompile my program. It's a real hassle to have to power down and power
back up just to edit the source code. So the question is:

DOES ANYONE KNOW OF A (CHEAP) TEXT EDITOR I CAN USE FOR THIS PURPOSE?

I tried downloading one off of bitnet, but those bitnet files aren't to
reliable(sp?)!!!! I've tried downloading six files and only on of them
worked. Oh well that's anothor story in itself.....

                                           Rob S.

P.S. Gary if you are reading this could you put me on your Z-Mag
     mailing list???!!!

Yes! Mine! For a mere $5 (to cover my <wink><wink> ***COSTS***
<nudge><nudge>) I will send you a copy of my assembly language
emacs-inspired but with changes TEXT EDITOR!!! Instructions included
on the disk. NOT copy-protected! I will even make changes for you if
I like your requests! Fits in 5K, edit buffer size is 16K, has exit
to DOS.

This reminds me of a question I've been going to ask for a long time:

Does anyone know if the UNIX editor "vi" is available/has been ported
to atari 8bit machines?

Thanks,
jorgy

About the best text editor/word processor you will find is the TEXTPRO one.
It has me features than speedscript (and lacks only one that I know of and
that is the character swap) and can edit any size file (I regularly edit 150k+
files).
The best thing about it is that it is free....

One option is to download TEXTPRO from Compu$erve.

    To Stan Lackey,

Sorry to post this, but I tried email to no avail. Stan, I am
interested in your Emacs-like Text Editor, and would like your Canadian
"rate". Please let me know if you can send me a copy up here. I have an
800XL with a 1050 drive, and my editor is hopeless. Thanx.

I also would love to get my hands on an EMACS like editor. I typically
use Textpro to edit files, but it is more a word processor than a program
editor and the word processing features can sometimes get in the way
(for example, the program always has word wrap on, so when I get into
it I have to hit ctrl-y [I think] to turn it off).

To Mike McPeak:
It's in the mail, rate same as US, $5. If you don't like it just return it.

To the newsgroup:
Sorry to reply on the net etc, but you know how it is. Gee if I'd known
there'd be so much interest in my editor I'd have charged more. :-) I
was thinking about expanding its file access mode to do all dup.sys does,
and having it live under the basic rom, accessed through the DOS command.
Worthwhile? Then I WOULD charge more. :-)

To the users of my text editor:

In response to the complaints about the display not fitting on a
regular TV - I have a NEW VERSION which has the ADDED FEATURE of NOT
CHANGING the display!!! After many, many man months of effort, this
NEW, ADDED FEATURE is available NOW for just $... just kidding. Please
everyone who wants it just email me your name&address and I will mail
you the new version. (I guess I should have kept a list but I'm new
to this sort of thing.)
