[comp.sys.atari.8bit] Simulating an Atari 8 bit in a HLL

kan@dg-rtp.dg.com (Victor Kan) (09/22/89)

I used to have an Atari 800 with loads of wonderful games.
During one of the stupidest years of my life (freshman year in college),
I sold the whole kit and kiboodle for a song.

I miss the games; I want to write an Atari 800 (or 130XE) simulator in a
high level language, preferably C.

My hardware platform is likely to be my AT compatible with EGA graphics.
Another possibility is Unix with X Windows.

Has anyone tried/done this? If so, what level of success did you have?

Even if the speed of the simulation is unacceptable for games, I want to
do this for the challenge and experience.

I'd appreciate any pointers, and especially donations of unused Atari
reference manuals, particularly those on 6502 architecture, Atari architecture,
and the OS internals. Something like Mapping the Atari would be so useful,
but it's tough to find Atari books in the stores these days.

Thanks!

Victor Kan asks about writing an Atari 8-bit computer emulator (simulator)..

The person to talk to would be Darek Mihocka. He's written a highly
successful 8-bit emulator that runs on the Atari ST. Unfortunately I don't
think he reads the 8-bit newsgroup, but he's active on the ST newsgroup,
as well as all of the major national information services.

I'm afraid I don't know his e-mail address on UseNet, but I'm sure a message
in the ST newsgroup will catch his attention...

Yes, but can you play four person M.U.L.E. on the ST using the
emulator? Three person?
