[comp.sys.atari.8bit] Hayes ???

ews00461@uxa.cso.uiuc.edu (12/14/89)

First, thank you to all who responded to my last question about
terminal programs. Many were unusually helpful and I appreciated
the responses. And to continue, the obvious next question...

How can I hook up my Hayes 1200 baud modem to my Atari 800 ?
What is an 850 interface ? Do I need one ? Will Amodem work
with this configuration ? A local computer store tells me that
a $ 20 cable will work. Will it ?

There once was a day that I knew something about 8 bits.
Sort of.

Thanks in advance, again!

An 850 interface is a unit to let you use modems and serial printers with
the Atari 8 bit. NO YOU DONT NEED ONE to connect your hayes modem to an Atari
800. If the cable your local computer store is referring is rs232 on one one
and Atari SIO on the other end (if not this type of cable is available through
Sura Corp), thats all you need. That will make your modem
COMPLETELY compatibe with all the programs designed for the Atari SX-212 modem,
including Determ, SX-Express, etc. This is how I've been using my modem for a
few years, and it has always worked flawlessy. If you have any more questions
feel free to ask.

"Just a cable" will NOT do the job. If that cable is a Supra R-Verter,
you're in trouble. The R-Verter is a small plastic box, with one open
end having an SIO port, and the two cables sticking out the other end.

R-Verters don't work for $#!T. I've got one that I use for
null-modeming stuff from the 8-bit to the ST. As a regular modem
interface, it's lousy.

I recommend either the 850 interface, or if you want expandability, the
Black Box from CSS. The BB is a printer/modem/hard disk interface with
TONS of extra features. It sells for $199, but is really worth it.

If you look at how the SX-212 works, you will realize that its the
same idea. I've been using such a cable with my Modem forthe last three years,
and hae nver had a problem running term software, in addtion have tried others
hayes compatible modems and they all worked flawlessly.

Could someone post or e-mail me a description of which pins of each connector
are connected together? i.e. rs232-----SIO

something like RS232 pin 2 to SIO pin?
RS232 pin 3 to SIO pin?
RS232 pin 7 to SIO pin? (this one is ground, should be easy to
					 guess!)
thanks in advance (assuming that this makes any sense!)
I'm asumming that it's just a matter of using nothing else than wire in the
above!
