[comp.sys.atari.8bit] 1027 Letter Quality printer

BGB100@PSUVM.BITNET (Bruce Blanar) (01/11/90)

Hi there!

Some friends of mine are having some problems with their 1027 letter quality
printer. They are using AtariWriter on a 65XE ( I think it's AtariWriter--
it's been years since I've worked on my 800 system! ). The problem is that
when they try to print out a document, the printer starts to print, but then
with now warning, it starts to print garbage and skip spaces and such. I'm
150 miles away from where they are so I only know what is wrong from what they
say over the phone. Any suggestions for a fix, or does it sound like the
printer is dying for good? I have suggested cleaning the printer up and
checking the cables, but after they swapped in some good cables the problem
was still there. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Mine did the same thing, a good cleaning job fixed it right up. You have
to clean the rails for both the print head and the strike plate since they
both slide back and forth. Use a silicone type lubricant to re-oil the
rails. Regular machine oil tends to collect dust too quick. I used a
lint free swab (no Q-tips, the cotton fibers get stuck on the rails) and
cleaned the rails with WD-40 first (since the old oil was gummed-up) then
I cleaned off the WD-40 with Isopropal Alcohol. After they dried I put
on the silicon lubricant stuff. Works great now, if only it was faster!

Doing the cleaning mentioned above should fix it right up, don't toss it.
Hope it helps out...
