[comp.sys.atari.8bit] Something has to be done...

ACSCHW@SEMASSU.BITNET (Is There In Truth No Beauty ?) (02/09/90)

Hello all,

I was very sorry to see the last message in the last digest about the
possible end of this group.

We can't let this happen. This is the only link that many people have
to Atari owners and Atari supplies (as the ones who seem to be doing the
supplying are the Atari owners....no suprise there). If I was going to
be around at this university and it was accesible via the internet (which
to my knowledge it isn't) I would volunteer, as I don't want to see this
list come to an end.

We have very little time, so lets hope that one of us enthusiasts finds
a site. If not, maybe, somehow, we could generate a list of all people
who are interested in staying in touch on Atari topics, and send this
list in the last few digests so that all of us can still stay in touch
(albiet a little less conviently).

If it does come to and end, may I say to all of you that when I joined
this group, my enthusiasm for my Atari (400, 800XL, 810 w/CHIP, 1050 USD,
850, and my Epson Printer) increased 10 fold. I have gotten several
good pieces of software from people on this list, and it is the only
good connection for 'discontinued' software.

Since ANALOG is no more :-( , if this group goes, that will be the end
of the good times for many of us.

Thanks everybody for listening...

I did not read such a message, if it came from Usenet. This
is also being posted to news.admin in the hopes of an authoritative answer.
Is this group coming to an end? If so, what can we do about keeping it
alive? I think that there is enough (but not overmuch) traffic in this
group to justify its existence.

In hopes of continuing reading,

What??!?!?!?

I don't think this is anything but a rumor...

There are groups in existence that have virtually NO traffic, so I don't think
that there is any near end to this group..

Besides, it would have been posted here first if the group was going to e
erased.

I for one have used this group many times to get help and to give it...
Most of you know me by now, and for those of you who do:

What's coming to an end is the redistribution of the group to Internet
(and Bitnet?) sites via the Info-Atari8 mailing list. The problem is
not lack of interest, but lack of a host to handle the collecting up,
digestification, and remailing of messages. It was done on
Score.Stanford.EDU until last year, when Score disappeared. We then
moved to Simtel20, but they're pleading overloading, and are moving a
number of lists off that host. We've had zero luck finding anyplace
else to handle the mailing list. Unless we can find someone who's
willing to provide some machine time and disk space, and who's able to
send and receive internet mail, the mailing list will be discontinued.

Sorry guys, we've tried real hard to find an alternative, but there
seems to be none.

and more.

     WHAT!?!?!?!?!?!?!

I must have missed this one, and by God I do NOT want this group to
end! This is the *ONLY* nation- and world-wide network for Atari users I
have ever found, and I'll be damned if I'll let some non-Atarian somewhere
yank it all out from under me!

Who do I write to, who do I call, who do I pester, who do I see, to stop
this dastardly event? I think ALL readers of this groupu should find out,
and mass-mail the daylights out of said parties to express our desire that
this group CONTINUE!

Note that I do NOT advocate irate blasting and invective- -- THAT
would backfire drastically! -- but rather a polite flood of requests that
any decision to terminate this group NOT be made!

Start pestering your local sysmanagers to find out who to contact
about this! I'm going to.

I too, hope to see this Usegroup continue... after all, it isn't as tho there
aren't any of us Atari 8-bitters OUT here...

I have seen quite a few messages concerning the possible deletion of
this newsgroup. I believe the cause of all this is merely the misinterpreta-
tion by the above reader (and others) of the message which started it all:

In article <9002080810.AA12038@ucbvax.Berkeley.EDU>, Michael Current
(current@carleton.edu) writes:

>[Questions concerning DOS XE and the XEP-80 deleted]

                            ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Reading between the lines, I see a user who is experiencing the com-
plete lack of support from Atari and most other commercial outfits for the
8-bit line. So Mr. Current makes a safe (although probably incorrect) assump-
tion that the 8-bit Atari-related newsgroup will go the same route as ANALOG
and ANTIC. Frankly, I see no justification for this, since the newsgroup gets
a fairly steady, albeit low, flow of messages. I've seen other newsgroups with
a much broader appeal receive little or no messages in weeks and/or months at a
time. INFO-ATARI8 (comp.sys.atari.8-bit) can boast of at least one message
every two or three days. Also note that there have never been any messages
from any "official" source stating the demise of this newsgroup; a quick
perusal of news.admin shows no reference to the removal of this newsgroup.
If/when that occurs, THEN we should start making some noise.

							Mike

I know some former subscribers who have already received their refund.
If you don't get yours in a reasonable time, write to LFP and ask for
it. They are still in business. They only discontinued Analog, so the
company is still responsible for refunding your money.
