[comp.sys.atari.8bit] Pending demise of newsgroup

DAVISM@kcgl1.eng.ohio-state.edu (Michael T. Davis) (02/13/90)

Apparently, only the INFO-ATARI8 side of the "newsgroup" will die.
How this affects the actual newsgroup (as opposed to the mailing list)
comp.sys.atari.8-bit, I don't know. (Explanations anyone?) It does seem
a good idea to inquire of the "powers that be" concerning the possible
demise of comp.sys.atari.8-bit, which I understand has already been performed.
In my last message, I made a statement concerning how comp.sys.atari-8-bit
would go the way of ANTIC and ANALOG; suffice to say that ANTIC has a ways
to go before it suffers the same fate as ANALOG. I'm sorry for any confusion
this may have caused.

P.S. Thanks to Michael Current for forwarding information to help me
straighten things out for myself.

It affects comp.sys.atari.8-bit not at all. To my knowledge, there has not
been any proposal to issue a rmgroup for this newsgroup.

I try to keep a close eye on news.admin, news.sysadmin and
news.announce.newgroups. (I dropped news.groups during the alt.fishies
flame wars, so almost anything could be there and I might not know about
it.)

It may be that the number of systems carrying the group is shrinking
because system administrators don't think it's worth carrying, but that's
another matter. No site is ever forced to carry any newsgroup.

Again, the problem seems to be related to BITnet lists, and not to the
main body of Usenet. Messages like this are quite confusing to those of
us on the non-BITnet side of the fence. Come to think of it, BITnet itself
is confusing from this side. Maybe from that side, too. :-)

Please don't let this board die... :(

Again, the problem seems to be related to BITnet lists,

No. As has been explained before, it's the Internet mailing list that's
shutting down. The Usenet newsgroup is maintained by whoever maintains
such things, same for BITNET or any other places to which these messages
get redistributed.
							    and not to the
main body of Usenet. Messages like this are quite confusing to those of
us on the non-BITnet side of the fence.

We've tried to be very clear about what's what. The Internet mailing
list "Info-Atari8" (and Info-Atari16) is shutting down. It's due to
lack of a host on which to do the processing of messages, not due to
lack of interest. The Usenet, Bitnet etc lists are not directly
affected by this, just recipients of the Info-Atari8 mailing list.

Hope that alleviates the confusion.

    What is a Metalist?
Do you mean "Mentalist", as in psychic,
or one who listens to heavy metal music,
or the user of a system "Meta-List"?

                                       just curious,
