I am going to make an atari I/O to RS-232 interface so that I can print from my 1200XL to an HP printer (on RS-232). Has anyone done this before? Can you help save me some trouble? It looks like the protocols aren't too different, but I may have to do some signal massaging... Any advice would be very appreciated! RE: Add an RS232 port.... Easiest way - buy an 850 interface Hard way - add a 6551 and a couple of MAX232 (RS232 level converters :) chips. Then write software for it. Charles_K_Hughes@cup.portal.com

The easiest way to save yourself some trouble is to buy an R: interface for
your 8-bit Atari. The P:R: Connection from ICD is one such interface. If
your printer had a parallel interface instead of serial, you could hook it
up with a P:R: Connection and it would be your P: device - most programs
that "talk to" a printer "know" it as P: With a serial connection, your
printer will be the R: device - a bit trickier to use that way.

I got mine for $40 where I have seen 850's for $70-$100 or more (but that was several years ago). Also, Supra makes a Supraverter that is supposed to do the same thing. -- *******Eric Sokolowsky (iconsys!ohs!esok) He who attacks the fundamentals of the American broadcasting industry attacks democracy itself. -- William S. A P: R: Connection will work just fine with a 1200XL, I've used one for years with no difficulties. To get enough juice out of the I/O port of a 1200XL to run any peripherals one must replace R63, an easily found current limitting resistor, with a piece of wire. A piece of cake.

Of course, opening the 1200XL will void any warranty still on the machine, but seriously, who still has a good warranty on a 1200XL? -- *******Eric Sokolowsky (iconsys!ohs!esok) Never call a man a fool. The P:R: will run on the 1200XL no problem if you make a slight modification to your 1200XL. The modification is documented in the P:R: connection instruction manual which comes with the P:R: when you purchase it, so there should be no problems. Of course, any modification to your computer voids your 90day warranty. But does anyone here really need to worry about that any longer? ;)
