----- Does anyone know the current status of Antic magazine? Word on a local BBS about a month ago was that it was going to merge with STart magazine beginning with the September issue. Is this true? And does anyone know when this issue is due out? I otherwise would have expected to receive an issue about a month ago, but have heard nothing. Any info much appreciated. -Ray

I subscribe to STart, and I didn't get last month's issue of it either.
Apparently there was no last issue. When I called Antic/STart's
subscription offices, they said they had no explanation. I assume they
are going bankrupt given the current sorry state of Atari computers. I
could be wrong, but I think that the October issue will be the last one.
Maybe there won't even be an issue, just an apology notice,
All this annoys me becase Atari computers have the best
price/performance ratio of anything on the market, and I like to have
some connection with other Atarians. Oh well, I'm saving up for a Mac II
anyway, haven't seen hide nor hair of the new Ataris...

What I've heard is that Antic has indeed ceased publi- cation. Current subscriptions will be transferred to STart subscriptions, with two STart issues for every Antic issue you were owed. The next STart issue is to be October's. Also, you could get a refund if you wanted. Does anyone know how much coverage STart has had for the 8-bits, for example in number of pages devoted to them? I'm doubtful that I'll be satisfied with just a few pages (I heard a figure of 16 pages) in a magazine that's largely devoted to the ST's, since I don't own an ST (nor can I afford to get one in the near future). As I understand it, Antic is being merged into STart. That is why STart
cancelled their September issue. (See _ST REPORT_ #6.31.) However, there
is some evidence that the 8-bit coverage will not last long. Recently,
there was a formal conference on Delphi with Tom Byron (Editor?) of STart.
I was only on for a short time, but someone else (LMCCLURE) quotes Tom
Byron as saying that "the Antic section is only temporary (about six
months)." Does this mean that 8-bit coverage will cease after 6 months
of STart, or that it will not be in a separate Antic section? I don't
know for sure. LMCCLURE interpreted it as the first meaning (8-bit
coverage is ending). Also, s/he says that Byron mentioned that the disks
will no longer be included with the subscription.

I was looking through the October STart over the weekend. It is at the newsstands now. I didn't count the pages, but I would say that 16 is about right. That includes the articles and the pages for the BASIC listings for the programs. I didn't buy the issue I was looking at because it was only available with the ST disk for about $12.95. I didn't see any of the articles that I really wanted to have either. There was no offer to get the 8bit programs listed on disk that I could see. I only took a quick glance, though, so I might have missed it. Kit Kimes AT&T Bell Labs Naperville, IL ...!att!iwtsa!kimes
