[comp.sys.atari.8bit] Whats the best GIF viewer?

rmartin@remus.rutgers.edu (Richard Martin) (10/11/90)

What is the best GIF file viewer for the 8bits? Can any of them take
advantage of the XE's extra bank? Can any display 640x420 or 1152x900
gifs with resonable clarity? Thanks-

There are only two GIF viewers for the 8-bit: my APACVIEW which
displays in graphics 9 and (256-color) APAC mode, and Don Davis's
ATVIEW8. Neither can use the XE's extra banks of RAM (except as
a RAM disk external to the workings of the viewer). I know mine
can only display files as wide as 720 pixels before it starts
overwriting other areas of memory (never tried it). Don's ATVIEW8
displays in graphics 15, so it might have the edge on clarity on
line drawings. APACVIEW does a great job with most continuous-tone
digitized photos (IMHO), especially if your monitor accepts APAC mode.
I'm updating APACVIEW to display in graphics 15, in four or 64 colors
with funny display lists and multiple page-flipping. Let me know
if you are interested.

I second the motion that Jeff's APACVIEW does the better job in general.
I have tried both viewers on several different files and have yet to
see APACVIEW loose, although in some cases, it is hard to tell the
difference.

Yes, I for one am interested. And I haven't forgotten that I promised
to send you a shareware donation and I will.

Sounds pretty good, I've had an atari since 1983 I didnt know it could
display gifs, How can I get a hold of either gif viewers? are there any
ftp sites with this software available? or can they be put up on this
conference?

Well I'd love to post my latest version of APACVIEW, my GIF
decoder/viewer program, but I can't post it directly here.
Is there someone out there on GEnie or CIS who's willing to
receive my file, UUEncode it, and post it here? Lacking that
could they pay me postage if I mail them a disk with it?
I have a more recent version than what has been uploaded to
either pay service, by the way.
