[comp.sys.atari.8bit] Atari 800 help

sphaak@vela.acs.oakland.edu (sphaak) (12/05/90)

My roommate has an 800, and has had it for 11 years. He has
wanted me to ask for help from the net for some time now.

His disk drive went on the bum, and he doesn't know what to do.
Where can he get it fixed/aligned. We called Atari, but they
don't care about the old machines; they are no help.

We live in the Detroit are, but are willing to ship it anywhere!

We use other computers for most things, nowadays, but there are
lots of REALLY fun things that we miss that are ONLY on the old,
best first and only, ATARI!

Thanks for any help! Please E-mail me for any responses to this. :-)

Call up Customer Service at Atari (sorry, I don't have the number) and
ask them what their current exchange rates are. The last time I checked
they were willing to take a 1027 printer and $75 and give you one of their
newer printers. They also did the same for broken 800xls, xes, etc.
I think they even do it for disk drives. In any case, give them a call
and ask about their exchange program. If they tell you that they have
no idea of what you are talking about, ask to speak to someone higher
up. They DID have this program, whether they still have it for the
8-bits (since they no longer manufacture them) or not, I don't know.

I posted this because others on the net will probably be interested.

Try Happy Computers in Ca. I don't have a phone number or address,
but any 8-bit or ST magazine should have an add for one or more of
their products. They used to have a service where they would clean,
fix, and align 8-bit drives for something like $45.00. This will
likely have changed somewhat, but they are good at what they do. Your
drive comes back from them purring like a kitten!
